The following is a statement released by the 129th Rescue Wing, California Air National Guard, regarding the passing of a sick crew member onboard a container ship, the Green Ridge on behalf of Col Gregory F. Jones, 129th Rescue Wing Commander:

"As you know, a four-man Guardian Angel Team on an MC-130P Combat Shadow departed from Moffett Federal Airfield Tuesday afternoon to conduct an overwater mission to save the life of a U.S. citizen on a container ship approximately 900 miles from San Francisco, Calif.

"Our Guardian Angel Team worked hard through the evening to care for the sick crew member.  Unfortunately, he passed away at approx. 6 a.m. according to a senior medical officer with the U.S. Navy."

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones of the crew member who passed away today.  We send a heartfelt thanks to the remaining crew members of the Green Ridge who notified the proper authorities which resulted in our unit's active response to the situation.  We would also like to especially thank the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy for their coordination in assisting our efforts."

Due to security and privacy issues, the names of the four Guardian Angel Pararescuemen and the name of the crew member who lost his life are being withheld at this time.
