9/8/2009 - MOFFETT FEDERAL AIRFIELD, Calif. -- Air National Guardsmen from the 129th Rescue Wing are scheduled to return here from a four-month deployment to Afghanistan tomorrow at 10 a.m.
The 25 Airmen coming home were part of the 129th Expeditionary Rescue Squadron, which provided combat search and rescue support to Operation Enduring Freedom's 451st Air Expeditionary Wing based at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan.
HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter crew members, maintainers and support personnel from the 129th Rescue Wing provided 24-hour medevac alert at Kandahar Airfield and Camp Bastion in the Helmand province. Performing up to eight rescue missions each day in active combat zones, the Airmen saved 187 injured people, including coalition forces, local nationals and sister service members.
"The members of the 129th Rescue Wing are truly proud of what our deployed personnel accomplished in Afghanistan," said Col. Amos Bagdasarian, 129th Rescue Wing commander. "They performed our life-saving mission very effectively and our personnel have been kept safe under extremely dangerous conditions."
All told, approximately 70 Airmen returned home this week from the deployment.
The primary mission of the 129th RQW is to train and be prepared to perform its wartime mission of combat search and rescue anywhere in the world. In addition to its wartime mission, the unit also works closely with the Coast Guard and various civil agencies on state missions. The unit has saved 786 people.
